What We Don't Know

According to spiritual and non-dual traditions such as Vedanta and Buddhism, the foundational dynamics underlying our experience, is that of the observer, observed, and process of observation. This seems straightforward and reasonable enough, but when we are using only 10-15% of our human potential, we know only a fraction of what there is to know about an object of perception that we are observing. Interestingly, we have constructed a world about which we know very little. Yet we have behaved with a high enough degree of confidence that we have built families, careers, institutions, religions, economies, governments, etc. each and all of which we expected would work. It is becoming increasingly apparent that we don’t know as much as is necessary to make it all work.
The Process of Observation
When we are using only a fraction of our human potential, the process of observation does not effectively inform us about the object of perception. For example, when looking at a brick, we observe the dimensions, color, texture, weight, etc. but we do not experience that the brick is more empty space than solid matter. We also do not experience that the brick is nothing but light at its deepest level, nor that within each grain of sand within the brick is contained the entire universe. As a matter of fact, we do not really directly experience the brick at all, only our idea of the brick. What’s more, we assume that using 10-15% of our human potential, we know enough to “set up house” and live our life.
Why We Feel Confident
Not continuously dwelling on the idea that there is another 85-90% of our human potential that we could unfold, we settle for our biases, assumptions, beliefs, and prior conditioning to serve as our foundation for knowing and interacting with our world. These sources of knowledge do not really connect us with much of reality, just a mere fraction of it. The mass of what could be known about life falls within the category of “we don’t know what we don’t know”.
Living a Life Based on Reality
As we progressively unfold more of our human potential, we become increasingly whole. Being whole means that we are not merely the observer, but the observed and the process of observation as well. As we unfold more of our potential, our individual biases and conditioning progressively disappear. Since they were standing in the way of our direct perception of reality, we increasingly connect with reality itself. The prior dynamic containing three distinct components increasingly gives way to the oneness of wholeness, so that in effect we no longer feel separate from the objects of perception but become one with them and experience them as intimately as ourselves…because they are part of our whole self. In fact, traditions such as Vedanta and Buddhism along with modern quantum physics suggest that the separation between observer and observed might just be a conceptual illusion…conjured by the limited cognitive abilities available at lower levels of human potential.
The Ultimate Potential
Experiencing our oneness with a brick allows us to do so much more than when living a fraction of our human potential. Ultimately, we could enter the gateway at the subtlest and most discrete subatomic level of the brick and experience anything in any time or place of the universe. Until then we will progressively unfold increasing levels of our understanding of life and our capability as we methodically apply our unfolding human potential to construction of the New Earth.
Getting There ASAP
The need of this time makes it opportune to unfold our human potential as soon as possible. There are many techniques and practices that support this unfoldment. One that I have used effectively since the late 1990’s is what I referred to in the May 8th article as the “Nirvana on Demand” technique.
